Ouch. It’s a harsh title and an even harsher world but unfortunately for 67% of women in America this is a fact.
You would think with such a large number (actually the majority) of women being a size 14+ that the term “plus size” would just in fact be regular size. More importantly you would think that retailers, who after all want to make more money, would work hard to cater to this demographic…but they don’t.
Many designers, retailers, fashion execs still place a stigma with women who happen to have more curves as “un-popular”, “un-fashionable”, but most importantly they share a fear of “plus size association”. It’s an odd idea that the PlusLivin staff has encountered numerous times. It’s the idea that to claim, or to be proud of having options greater than size 12 is to lower or diminish one’s brand. It’s this absurd idea that larger women somehow can’t be beautiful or be advertised in the mainstream.
How is it that 67% of America’s women are only represented in the mainstream by 1 – 2%?
Most shoppers are shooed into the dark corners of (pick almost any store) IF that retailer carries sizes over 12/14. Often sales associates might also retort with the usual “we have plus-size but only online”. Well if that doesn’t scream “NAH YOU CAN GO ONLINE BECAUSE WE DON’T WANT YOU HERE!” After all no one likes to hastily leave a store as soon as they enter because of their size.
Fortunately there are retailers in their right minds that DO carry size 12+ and not just in shapeless frumps of garbage bags.
